QR codes on product packaging
Packaging is the one ad every customer sees. A code on the box can carry a setup video, a manual, a reorder link or a review request, and outlast any print run when it's dynamic.
Where QR codes help
Setup and how-to videos
Open a YouTube video that shows assembly or first use.
Make a YouTube QR code →Manuals and safety sheets
Link to a PDF manual instead of printing pages of instructions.
Make a PDF QR code →Example: a coffee roaster
Each bag has a dynamic code: 'Scan for brew guide'. It opens a short video for that coffee. When the roaster changes beans, they point the code at the new guide, so bags printed months earlier stay useful.
A second code on the shipping box asks for a review two weeks after delivery, when customers have tried the coffee.
Get it right first time
- Packaging runs are expensive: always use dynamic codes.
- Avoid curves and seams; put codes on flat panels.
- Ask your printer for a proof and test it on the real material.
- Keep codes at least 2 cm wide, more on glossy film.
Questions people ask
Product packaging
Will a QR code on packaging still work in five years?
A static code works as long as its link does. A dynamic code works while its short link is active, and you can repoint it if your website changes.
Can a QR code replace a barcode on packaging?
Not yet for most retailers. Keep the EAN or UPC barcode for checkout and add a QR code for customers.
