Tips

Tag links you can compare later

Pick names once

Write down your sources and mediums and reuse them. “qr_code”, “QR” and “qr-code” become three different rows in your reports.

One link per placement

Give each poster, flyer or table its own content tag, like poster_window and poster_till, to see which spot works.

Use medium qr_code offline

For anything printed, set medium to qr_code and the source to the item. Then all printed traffic adds up in one place.

Tag the destination, not the short link

Tags go on the page address. Put the tagged address into a short link or dynamic code, and you can change it later.

No personal data

Never put email addresses or names into tags. They end up in analytics reports that many people can see.

UTM tags don't measure sales

They label visits. To count sign-ups or sales, set up conversions in your analytics tool.

FAQ

Questions people ask

UTM builder

What is a UTM builder?

A tool that adds utm_ parameters to a web address. Analytics tools such as Google Analytics read them to tell you where each visit came from.

Do UTM tags work in QR codes?

Yes. The tags are part of the address the code opens, so the visit is labelled like any other. Use a dynamic code so the address stays short and you can change the tags later.

Which tags are required?

Google Analytics needs at least utm_source. We also recommend medium and campaign so your reports group visits properly.

Is my link sent anywhere?

No. The builder runs in your browser. Only if you make a short link is the address saved to your account.

Can I add tags to a short link I already have?

Yes. Open the link in your dashboard and edit its destination; the short link and its QR code stay the same.

Is it free?

The builder is free without an account. Short links and dynamic codes have a free allowance, and Pro gives you hundreds.
