    About ITF-14

    What is a ITF-14 barcode?

ITF-14 carries a 14-digit GTIN-14 on outer cartons and cases. It uses Interleaved 2 of 5, which prints well on corrugated cardboard, and a thick bearer frame stops a scanner reading only part of the code.

The first digit is the packaging indicator (1 to 8) that tells a case of 12 from a case of 24. The next 12 digits usually come from the GTIN of the item inside, and the last is a new check digit.

    Size and print

Sizing and printing a ITF-14 barcode

    Module width

GS1 recommends 0.495 to 1.016 mm for ITF-14. Use the larger end when printing straight onto corrugated board.

    Bar height

At least 32 mm, so it can be scanned quickly in a warehouse.

    Bearer bars

Keep the frame: on corrugated board it evens out printing pressure and stops partial reads.

    Placement

On at least two adjacent sides of the carton, with the bottom of the bars about 32 mm above the base.

Use a vector file for print

SVG, PDF and EPS stay sharp at any size, so packaging designers and print shops prefer them. For PNG, download at your printer's resolution and place it at 100%.

    FAQ

    ITF-14 questions

    ITF-14 or GS1-128 on cartons?

ITF-14 holds only the GTIN-14 and prints well on rough board. Use GS1-128 when you also need batch, dates or quantity.

Do cases need their own GTIN?

Yes. Each different packaging level (a case of 6, a case of 24) needs its own GTIN-14, made with a different indicator digit.

    What is the indicator digit?

The first digit, 1 to 8, chosen by you for each packaging level. 9 is reserved for items of variable measure.
