What is a Data Matrix barcode?
Data Matrix is a square 2D code with an L-shaped solid border on two sides that scanners use to find and line it up. It holds up to 2,335 letters or 3,116 digits and still reads when part of it is damaged, thanks to Reed-Solomon error correction.
It stays readable when very small, so manufacturers etch, laser or print it straight onto parts and circuit boards. This tool makes standard Data Matrix (ECC 200).

How to make a Data Matrix barcode
Type your data
A serial number, part number or any text, up to about 1,500 characters.
Set the module size
Each square module is the module width you choose. Bigger modules read from further away.
Download and test
Data Matrix needs a camera-based scanner. Test with the one that will be used.
Sizing and printing a Data Matrix barcode
Module size
0.25 mm or more for labels read with a handheld imager; smaller for direct part marks read with a fixed camera.
Quiet zone
At least 1 module of blank space all round; 2 or more is safer.
Scanners
Data Matrix needs a camera-based (2D imager) scanner. Laser scanners can't read it.
GS1 labels
Pharmaceutical and medical device labels usually need GS1 DataMatrix with Application Identifiers. Check what your regulator or customer asks for.
Use a vector file for print
SVG, PDF and EPS stay sharp at any size, so packaging designers and print shops prefer them. For PNG, download at your printer's resolution and place it at 100%.
Data Matrix questions
Can a phone read Data Matrix?
Many barcode scanner apps do. Built-in camera apps often look only for QR codes, so if the public will scan it, a QR code is the safer choice.
Data Matrix or QR code?
Data Matrix is smaller for the same data and common in industry. QR codes are what phones expect, and they're better for links.
How small can a Data Matrix be?
It depends on the data and the reader. A short serial number at a 0.25 mm module is about 4 mm square.
