What is a Code 128 barcode?
Code 128 is the most widely used barcode for text and numbers in logistics and inventory. It holds every keyboard character and packs runs of digits two to a symbol, so it stays compact.
It has three character sets (A, B and C) and the encoder switches between them automatically; you just type your text. A built-in check character catches misreads and isn't printed in the text below.
Where it's used
- Shipping and warehouse labels
- SKUs, part numbers and serial numbers
- Asset tags on equipment
- Library cards, tickets and wristbands
How to make a Code 128 barcode
Type your text
Letters, digits and symbols, up to 80 characters. Long numbers are packed tightly.
Set the size
Choose a module width your printer can print cleanly and a comfortable bar height.
Download and test
PNG is free; use SVG, PDF or EPS for print. Scan a printed sample with your scanner.
Sizing and printing a Code 128 barcode
Quiet zone
Leave at least 10 modules of blank space on each side, and never less than about 3 mm.
Bar height
A height of at least 15% of the barcode's length, or 6.35 mm, makes it easy to scan by hand.
Module width
0.25 mm or more for thermal label printers; down to about 0.19 mm on good laser printers.
Long numbers
Runs of digits are encoded two per character, so a 12-digit number takes about half the width of 12 letters.
Use a vector file for print
SVG, PDF and EPS stay sharp at any size, so packaging designers and print shops prefer them. For PNG, download at your printer's resolution and place it at 100%.
Code 128 questions
Code 128 or Code 39?
Code 128 for anything new: it's more compact and holds lowercase letters and symbols. Use Code 39 only if an existing system asks for it.
Is there a length limit?
The format has no fixed limit, but past about 80 characters the barcode gets too wide to scan easily. For more data, use Data Matrix or a QR code.
What's the difference between Code 128 and GS1-128?
GS1-128 is Code 128 with a special start character and data in GS1 Application Identifiers, for supply-chain labels. Plain Code 128 is for your own labels.
Can phones scan Code 128?
Most barcode scanner apps can. Built-in camera apps often only look for QR codes, so test with the app your users will have.
