Why can't I just type my WeChat ID?
WeChat doesn't offer a public link format for IDs. The link inside your in-app code is the reliable way to open your profile.
Will it work with phone cameras outside China?
Phone cameras open the link in a browser, which then hands over to WeChat if it's installed. WeChat's own scanner opens it directly.
