Static vs dynamic QR codes

Which kind to choose, and why it matters once a code is printed.

A static code stores your content in the pattern itself. It works forever, needs no account and nothing goes through our servers, but it can't be changed or tracked. Making a change means printing a new code.

A dynamic code stores a short link such as /r/abc123. When someone scans it we send them on to your destination. That gives you two things:

  • Edit after printing. Change the destination whenever you like. The printed code keeps working.
  • Scan statistics. See how many people scanned, when, in which country and on which kind of device.

Which should I use?

  • Use static for things that never change: your WiFi password, a contact card, a fixed web address.
  • Use dynamic for anything printed in quantity or for a long time: menus, packaging, flyers, posters, business cards that link to a page that may move.

The free plan includes one dynamic code that stays live forever. Paid plans include more, plus routing rules, campaigns and custom short endings.
